Empowering people with the freedom to move

Design Lead

2019-2020

Summary

I led the design of the new trade-in experience at Opendoor which helped contingent buyers coordinate the process of selling their old home and buying a new home to avoid double moves and double mortgages. This helped connect two previously disconnected parts of Opendoor's business, buying & selling.

A key part of this connection was the realization that 30% of customers who choose to sell with Opendoor also choose to buy with Opendoor, in contrast to market conditions which say 70% of sellers are also buying a home at the same time.

“If trade-ins was Opendoor’s core product, how would we build it?”

Mapping the system

Before exploring design solutions, it was important for me to meet with stakeholders across the organization, and familiarize myself with the core touchpoints of the product that impact the customer journey. Through research, interviews, and a lot of 1-1s, I was able to map out a high level view of the current product architecture.

Iterating based on data

Part of the process that I implemented was a cross functional collaboration between design, engineering, research, data science, and marketing to craft a seamless experience that fit into Opendoor’s ecosystem.

The solution

The end solution was a full trade-in dashboard that guides users throughout every step of their shopping journey, contextual to every action they take with recommendations on what action to take next to meet their moving goal.
